Doctor Resources and other professionals

Looking at the photo above, I’m tempted to wonder if the medical motto is “follow the money”. (That’s from the movie All the President’s Men, but it is often confused with “Show me the money!” from another movie, Jerry Maguire.) Kidding aside, it is an important concern to make sure your doctor isn’t being unduly influenced by financial incentives from the makers of drugs and devices. The government provides the Open Payments database where you can search for obvious connections your physician might have.

One goal is to find a doctor who will listen. Doctor time with patients is only minutes long and gets shorter all the time and is subject to more and more intrusions by staff and making computer entries. Worse yet, on average, doctors interrupt patients after only 11 seconds.

Probably the most frequent question I get from listeners and readers is how to find an enlightened doctor like the guests we interview on the radio show. As you know, for important medical decisions, people are counseled to get a “second opinion”. They probably should do that not just in a crisis, but for health in general. What they usually don’t realize is that when they consult a second doctor if that one also went to a mainstream medical school and is being routinely educated by the same drug companies, what they are really getting is the same opinion 2 different times. That is why I think everyone should have a non-mainstream practitioner on their team so they can make informed decisions with a broader base of information. (Please read the page on Quacks.)

Some of the associations linked below have a practitioner locator utility on their sites. Another approach is to ask a local independent health food store or compounding pharmacist who they get good reports about.

Chiropractors who can be accessed on this linked site tend to be holistic and well trained. The chiropractic profession is an excellent example of one that misunderstood and not properly appreciated by the medical establishment. This description by B. J. Palmer shows gives critics food for thought: “What Chiropractic does, is that it simply takes the handcuffs off Nature, as it were. By finding the particular vertebra that had shifted and restoring it to its natural position, the adjustment thus releases the natural flow of nerve impulse. When the maze of nerves, or Nature’s communication system, supplies the body with the energy it needs for well-being, you have health.”
