Healthy by Nature radio show this week
If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, you should listen to this show because adrenal fatigue may be the cause. Although this is a common problem, it is not commonly addressed in mainstream medicine. Richard Snyder, DO discusses his new book, Adrenal Fatigue for Dummies which explains the condition and how to reverse the problem. You may remember Dr. Snyder from prior visits to the show to discuss kidney problems. Click here to find podcasts, show archives and how to listen nationwide.
“Preteen’s cholesterol often high”
That was the headline of an article this week in our newspaper. Sadly, I was not shocked that in a study of 13,000 Houston youths ages 9 to 11, nearly half had high levels of LDL (so-called bad) cholesterol and low levels of HDL (so-called good) cholesterol. Because this such a scary trend and because drug companies typically use their vast resources to assure prime publicity of any such cholesterol news, at first I was surprised that the article was on page 9. However, after reading a NBC News piece, it hit me that the pharmaceutical industry wouldn’t want to appear to be pushing adult cholesterol meds on children.
The companies must also be aware that if consumers knew that children can reduce obesity and normalize cholesterol as well as triglycerides with a better diet, they might figure out they could do the same for themselves. That would be bad for business for the makers of cholesterol medications.
As NBC noted, evidence is mounting that increased intake of fruits and vegetables is part of the solution. So is reducing the kid’s intake of refined starch and sugar products which elevate cholesterol and are a major contributor to their suffering in large numbers from what used to be called “adult onset diabetes” (and before that “sugar diabetes”.)
What does fat have to do with that?
America’s massive problem with heart disease and the misinformation surrounding fat is one reason I wrote my skinny little quick-read book, Fat-Free Folly. It makes me crazy that people (even doctors and the media) are still obsessed with cutting fat and usually replace it with foods that are much worse for their health. I also hate that “they” mischaracterize cholesterol. For starters, cholesterol is basically a protective substance until it is oxidized and that fact is never mentioned. Also, the reason I used the term “so-called” in regard to LDL and HDL is that they rarely mention that some LDL is good and some HDL is bad. I talk a bit about that in the booklet.
I also explain the misinformation we are being fed on saturated fat and give science-based advice on which fats and oils to use in the kitchen. For $6.95 (plus a couple of dollars for shipping) I also provide reliable answers on these questions and more:
• Does fat in food really make us fat or raise cholesterol?
• Which oil reduces death from all causes?
• Why is the low-fat craze a public health disaster?
• What if saturated fat isn’t actually as bad a they say?
• Is it okay to eat eggs?
• How can butter possibly be a good thing?
• Which fat trims body fat?
• Which fat may help brain disease?
• Which oils make your joints hurt and which help?
• Which oils may help prevent breast cancer, improve macular degeneration?
• What is the real story on Canola Oil?
It took a tremendous amount of research to substantiate my contention that the conventional wisdom is not wise. I’m proud of the book (despite two typos that Bill’s engineer friends found immediately) and hope it will help a lot of people. Even if you already know the answer to all these questions, you might find this booklet a handy thing to give to friends and family that are fat-obsessed. Perhaps you should buy one for your doctor? Thank you for enduring this blatant plug.
