As part of much needed downsizing, I’ve been going through some old notebooks of functional medicine newsletters. “Functional medicine” is a patient-centered approach that blends systems biology, molecular medicine, natural medicine, nutrition, and consideration of how the whole body works, including the brain to find the root cause of trouble. The articles in these notebooks were groundbreaking at the time and I think because of the overwhelming dominance of pharmaceutical medicine, are still ahead of their time. In coming weeks, I’m going to highlight a few that I saved from the recycling bin. This tidbit from the notebook was based on a study published in June 1993. Subjects with mildly elevated blood pressure were limited to 2.8 grams of salt per day. There was a loss of water weight and negative changes in aspects of blood sugar management, kidney function, and cholesterol (e.g. reduced HDL), blood pressure was NOT affected. We now know that excessively low sodium damages the heart and kidneys. If you go to pubmed.gov and search “salt restriction”, today you get 11,198 results! The FDA currently recommends a limit of 2.3 grams of salt a day for everyone except seniors, African Americans and other groups who are advised to use a 1.5 gram limit. (I am not sure why the agency gets some idea and that becomes like permanent dogma no matter what research follows.) This study notes, “the major benefits of salt according to modern medicine resources are; aiding the balance of electrolytes and fluids, carry nutrients into cells, regulation of acid-base balance, support transfer of nerve impulses, regulate blood pressure, and secretion of gastric acid.” So, there are benefits to salt intake and reasons not to advise strict reductions. The biggest issue is probably encouraging restaurants and food producers to be more moderate with the salt we don’t see. Most people and even doctors would just take the FDA’s word for the right level and probably no one would dig through 11,000 studies to find that one with cautions from back in 1993. It appears (not surprisingly) that you can over do it in either direction. I recommend reading this wonderful article by Bill Sardi. He balances the negatives and positives from the science and gives great practical advice. For example: if you crave salt, you might be low in zinc. |

| According to this study (and others), Tai Chi is helpful to lower blood pressure. I wish that this gentle and elegant exercise was more widely available because it has many benefits. One morning years ago, Bill and I were in Hong Kong and walking through Kowloon Park. We saw several dozen natives engaged in Tai Chi. They kindly motioned for us to join them. We gratefully accepted and I’ll have to say it is one of my fondest memories.
