Healthy by Nature radio show THIS WEEK
test

We discussed the dangers of artificial sweeteners with Janet Starr Hull, PHD who is an educator, author, counselor, blogger, and motivator. She was previously an OSHA Environmental Hazardous Waste Emergency Response Specialist and Toxicologist, a firefighter, and an environmental science professor at The University of North Texas. In 1991, she was miss-diagnosed with Grave’s disease and no one knew the cause or why she was dying. Because of her engineering background, she studied and discovered that aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal®) caused her illness! Knowing the CAUSE, she was able to cure herself naturally in a matter of months. Janet wrote Sweet Poison: How the World’s Most Popular Artificial Sweetener Is Killing—Us My Story in hopes of alerting others to the danger of the chemical sweetener. We also discussed her other book, Splenda® Is It Safe Or Not?(on her website, you can get a Free copy of her Detox Program).

What is old is new again

The photos above have nothing to do with today’s topic…they just make me happy. They were taken a year ago while the family was on a vacation excursion to Roatan, Honduras. One is a very favorite memory–when I got to hold a sloth! (More accurately, she [?] held me with her extremely sharp claws.) The second one was just giggle-time as a monkey decided to sit on top of my head.

I noted last week that as part of downsizing, I’ve been going through some old natural medicine newsletters and seminar materials. The information in these notebooks was groundbreaking at the time and holds up today. However, apparently because of the overwhelming dominance of pharmaceutical medicine, medical practice has largely ignored the substantial benefits that could have been gained by using the ideas. The following clinical pearl was one I saved from the recycling bin.

A doctor wrote in an Emergency Medicine Journal to review the many studies demonstrating how IV magnesium saves lives from heart attacks if given promptly in the ER. He noted that there were many potential mechanisms for that effect (e.g. helping with a-fib and other arrythmias). And he anticipated that the mineral magnesium would become a staple in cardiac care. Oops, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Too bad, because magnesium is amazing for everyone. One reason I think that natural products are slow to be incorporated into medical care is that doctors are busy and don’t read all the medical journals. They might also be thrown off if they only read the headlines. I recall one study with the headline, “Vitamin C fails to lower cholesterol.” Docs might have easily gotten the wrong idea if they didn’t keep reading because the study was done on subjects who had normal, NOT elevated cholesterol!

 UPDATE

  • Most Americans do not get sufficient dietary fiber (i.e. 25-30 grams per day). Ideally, we get our fiber from whole foods such as unprocessed grains, seeds, beans, vegetables like broccoli, nuts and fruits. Those fibers are important for feeding a diversity of our friendly bacteria. But, for a little extra help, I like fiber gummies (which I can use instead of dessert). I found this one at Costco and online Fiber Care Prebiotic Gummies, (6g of Fiber Per Serving, FOS from Beets, Digestive Health, Supports Regularity, Mixed Fruit Flavor) Although they contain no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, they are naturally sweet and so it is easy to remember to take them because they taste good.
