We will explore natural ways to lower blood pressure with my first guest, John Young, MD who practices integrative medicine in the Tampa / Clearwater / St. Pete area. He is also the author of the book, Beyond Treatment about building health from the cellular level up. Then we will tackle a subject new to our program but that affects us all eventually, grief. My guest, Russell Friedman is the director of the Grief Recovery Institute and the author of The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss. Call with questions or suggestions if you or a friend is grieving over loss of a loved one or a national tragedy or you just don’t know how to comfort a co-worker whose pet has passed away. Our number is 1-800-281-8255. Click here to find podcasts, show archives and how to listen nationwide.

When we get blood tests along with an annual checkup and all the numbers come back in the normal range, we can be tempted to think that means we are healthy. I guess that might be true if a person’s definition of “healthy” is no more than the “absence of a diagnosis”. Those standard tests basically give the doctor a measure of how diseased we are. For example, if liver enzymes show as “normal” that means “average” of the walking wounded and that there is not a clear sign of disease. Hopefully we are aiming higher…for optimum function and resilience. We want a liver that is excellent at doing its work. Also, except for iron, those tests don’t give us much information about our nutritional status. While there are fancy tests that do give us a snapshot of how well nourished we are, there are other ways to get a heads up. Check out our library article on some everyday clues that might be right under our noses.
