Mother’s Day gifts with a healthful twist

Healthy by Nature radio show this week
test
I expect to have a ton of fun this week. Andy Hopkins and I will talk with exhibitors live at our 7th Annual Natural HealthFest (NHF). We’ll discuss an invention to relieve back problems; clever ways to reduce use of toxic home cleaners; a better kind of mattress; safer landscape management; and a popular natural protein bar. These remote shows are always lively and we try to extract a pearl of wisdom from each of our guests that will be helpful for all listeners. (Join us there if you can.) Mother’s Day*

I’m finishing up my Detox presentation for the NHF and other last minute event chores. So, although I don’t have time to do a blog post, I did want to offer these thoughts about Mother’s Day gifts:

  • Mom might get a kick out of a spiralizer…I did. It makes strings of hard vegetables that are like spaghetti and that makes an interesting way to put additional healthful veggies into the diet. This link is an example (it is the brand I have). If you want one quicker, Bed Bath and Beyond carries them and you can get a coupon online for 20% off.
  • Research continues to show that cocoa is good for our health—cholesterol and blood pressure for example. (Dang, I feel bad that years ago I tried to get people to eat carob instead because we nutritionists figured that if chocolate tastes good it must be bad for us.) Do your Mom an extra favor and buy the really high quality stuff—the higher the % of cocoa and the less sugar the healthier. The better brands seem less likely to contain contaminants. The product “barkTHINS” is a good transition for those accustomed to milk chocolate rather than dark. It has clean ingredients and is also “Fair Trade”. Some of their varieties include crunchy additions like almonds or pumpkin seeds. (Our Costco has a good price on a large bag.)
  • I’ve mentioned this before…cut flowers are lovely, but we do have to fuss with them and they tend to wilt quickly. I’m always thrilled with a live flowering plant. (My favorite is an orchid. I have learned to not over-water them and they last to surprise me with new blooms months later.)
  • There will be many good gift ideas at Natural HealthFest and, if you can, bring Mom! The event will be entertaining and beneficial. Besides, what she probably wants most is simply your company.

Last Week Follow-up

LISTEN to that show in the archives.

One of the unsung heroes of health is water. Water industry expert, Paul Barattiero, C.Ped (Certified Pedorthist) explained not only the health cost of chronic dehydration, but also how to make water even more beneficial. Another unsung hero of health is our friend Doug Kaufmann of the popular TV show, Know the Cause. Mainstream medicine is slowly catching up with his message, but untold numbers of viewers and integrative professionals sing his praises a lot for his pioneering work with fungus. He told us about a recent talk he gave to oncologists. Both of these guests are featured speakers and exhibitors at Natural HealthFest on May 7.
