Common medical advice the science does not back up

Healthy by Nature radio show this week
test

What an interesting show. I know because I recorded it earlier this week with a couple of peachy guests. Anthony Thomas, PHD fills in some more blanks on vitamin K. For example, why we need it for more than helping guide calcium into bones instead of arteries (as though that isn’t enough). We also talk about why so many folks are not getting enough vitamin K and why we might want to supplement with 3 different types of it.

Then psychiatrist Hyla Cass, MD and I talk about how she helps people with mental health issues and addictions by using natural supplements instead of psych drugs. She wrote a fascinating article in Huffington Post about how the perpetrators of grizzly crimes that we hear about in the news are often driven to bizarre acts by the side effects of psych medications. Her books include: The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free; Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time; Supplement Your Prescription: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Nutrition; and Eight Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women to Correct Imbalances, Reclaim Energy and Restore Well-Being. On her website, you can sign up for a free e-book, Reclaim Your Brain. I asked her about phone appointments and she said it would save money to just read the books which will tell you which of her supplements may help.

What if the doctor’s orders are wrong?

I am bothered by the whole concept of doctors “orders”. This week I provide links to some articles on debunking a bunch of common medical advice for which there appears to be no science. Topics include stents, HDL cholesterol, diet and exercise, etc. My blog also offers some ideas on how to get more balanced advice.

Electromagnetic Field & Chronic Pain Symposium

We live in a sea of electromagnetic fields. But, do we have any idea what do they do to us? A symposium will examine that question Saturday, March 18 at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in Richardson. I am honored to be one of the speakers…among others that are mostly MD’s and PHD’s. The event is FREE and there will even be refreshments! Click here for more details.

LISTEN to that show in the archives.

William J. Rea, M.D., was trained as a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, but he became an expert in the environmental aspects of health and disease. He is also the author of several textbooks. I owe Dr. Rea a great deal for all I have learned from him over several decades. He is the founder and Director of the Environmental Health Center (EHC-D) in Dallas. (That is a place where doctors from around the world send the patients that they just cannot figure out how to help.) We discussed the negative health effects of chemicals and other toxic influences we encounter. The new frontier is understanding how electromagnetic frequencies affect us. He is one of the organizers of the March 18th EMF event listed on our events page.

MY BOOKS:

The Probiotic Cure. We now know that the microorganisms in our gut are a crucial part of our human instruction manual and that they control thousands of biological functions in our bodies. It is past time that we learned how to care for them because important varieties are disappearing and leaving illness behind.

Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec & Other Acid Blockers. Subtitle: What to Use to Relieve Acid Reflux, Heartburn, and Gastric Ailments.
Besides explaining the dangers of these medications and helping fix the real cause (which is seldom too much acid) this book is also helpful for solving other digestive problems.

Aloe Vera – Modern Science Sheds Light on an Ancient Herbal Remedy. Research shows that Aloe has benefit beyond skin and digestion–also for immune function, detoxification, nutrient absorption, blood antioxidant levels, blood sugar regulation and more. Learn how to pick the most potent brands.
