Healthy by Nature radio show this week: It’s back-to-school time, so it’s appropriate that the topic is how student behavior and brain function might be affected by omega 3 oils. I’m sure there will also be a lesson there for those of us going back to work instead of school. Stuart Tomc is always fun. Click here to find podcasts, show archives and ways to listen nationwide. Listener question
Q: I am constantly bothered by an excess amount of mucous in my throat & sometimes gets in the roof of my mouth. I am an extremely healthy person, take many supplements, eat healthy in every way, & get plenty of exercise. I know many people that are bothered by this. What can I do????? Lynne
A: The mucous is most likely coming from up in the sinuses. The tissues of our sinuses create mucous in reaction to some irritant like an allergen or an infection. The mucous protects the tissues and helps flush out whatever the problem is. (Our lungs and digestive tracts do the same thing.) A diary is often your best tool. Your notes can determine when the problem is worse, e.g. on rainy days, in the morning, after dairy foods, etc. (Dairy and soy both give me that problem.) If the mucous is most noticeable in the morning, it might be due to dust mites. (They are little critters that live on dead skin. Yes, gross, but everyone has them.) In that case, think about washing the mattress pad, vacuuming the mattress and getting a new pillow. Flushing your nasal passages with netipot filled with a solution of salt and soda will get rid of most irritants. But it takes more than that to get rid of an infection.
Although bacterial infections do occur, chronic sinus problems are almost always a result of yeasts. Even healthy people can harbor yeasts because there are so many things in our environment that support them and also that hamper our friendly bacteria. You might go to this page of my site and under digestion select the “Yeast Questionnaire”. It is theoretically possible for the yeasts to be only in your sinuses, but if you have other symptoms (everything from skin rashes to boggy brain and depression), it may mean you have yeasts elsewhere in your system. If so, that will make the sinus problem harder to shake. Of course, there are supplements to kill yeast. And probiotics are especially important. In my digestion book I have a whole chapter on yeasts and what to do about them as well as a chapter on probiotics. (Get my book free with the purchase of 2 boxes of Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics). Yeasts will continue to cause problems that are much worse than just mucous if you eat a diet that feeds them their favorite foods. This book by Doug Kaufmann tells you how to get on a good path and enjoy it.
