New wrinkles in the wrinkle wars

Healthy by Nature radio show this week: We’ve talked about vision and virtually every other aspect of health, but finally this week we will talk about our sense of hearing – how to preserve it and what to do when it fades. Our expert in this exploration is Dr. Daxton K. Moss Au.D., CCC-A. We also talk with Scott Cunningham about sweeteners, especially Xylitol. Call the live show with questions at 1-800-281-8255. Is beauty really only skin deep?
That old saying was, of course, to remind us to look past appearances and appreciate a person’s character. However, many people treat the skin as though it isn’t even connected to the rest of the body. In fact, your skin will only look as good as the health of the body underneath it. For example, if you drink sufficient water, your skin looks smoother. If you exercise, your skin retains a glow. Here is an interesting example from the world of supplements:

Aloe vera – A study showed that swallowing an Aloe vera supplement significantly reduced wrinkles on skin that had suffered sun damage. The Aloe seemed to work some of the same magic working on the inside that it does when applied to the outside. For one thing, it helped increase the collagen in the skin. LINK.

There could be any number of additional connections because Aloe has so many health benefits. Among them: it can improve digestion, boost the absorption of vitamins, increase blood antioxidants and reduce blood toxins. All of those actions could indirectly show up on the skin. Surprisingly, those good results were obtained by using just a generic Korean Aloe. I wonder how much better might they have done with my favorite, the polysaccharide-enhanced Lily of the Desert Aloe vera?

Yes, we often forget that building better health makes you look better. But, Americans are even less aware that what we put ON our skin will likely end up IN our body. . .and perhaps cause trouble.  Because so much is absorbed through the skin, we should only use body care products that are safe enough to eat.

Coconut Oil – Besides being valued for its internal benefits, coconut oil can also be used topically as a safe and effective moisture barrier, i.e. moisturizer. (It also helps the hair and fights fungal conditions on the scalp.)

Compare this food oil to the mineral oil thatis typically used for the same purpose in mass-market hand lotions and moisturizers. Although it sounds like it might be a harmless source of minerals, mineral oil is actually a petroleum derivative. A study using autopsies found that 48% of the livers and 46% of the spleens showed signs of inflammatory fatty cysts around deposits of mineral oil. Since we don’t drink mineral oil, it must have gotten to those organs after being absorbed through the skin. LINK. (One part of our June 6 program will cover ingredients it is best to avoid in antiperspirants, hand sanitizers, perfumes and insect repellants.)

More. NeoCell Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid are certainly good for providing the raw material to build younger skin and you can see immediate improvement with the Ezzi-lift device. But NO beauty treatment is likely to have as dramatic an effect (and do more to support overall health) as stopping smoking. LINK.
