THE CASE OF THE FOOD NANNY
You may have heard on the news today that New York’s Mayor Bloomberg plans to build on his previous successes with banning hydrogenated fat in restaurants and smoking in public. His target this time is large sweetened beverages. The Health Department will forbid the sale of sweet drinks larger than 16 ounces in its 20,000 restaurants plus theaters and athletic facilities. My thoughts:

PRO: No one needs sugary beverages, period. The over-consumption of soft drinks and other sweetened beverages may well be the biggest underlying, easily avoided cause of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. I heard an interview with a NY citizen who literally whined “in this economy, without pop, what am I supposed to drink?” Puuleeez, it’s called “water” and it is very good for you. As tap water goes, NY City’s is actually among the best. Mr. Bloomberg did do a lot of good by banning indoor smoking in public places and by getting rid of trans fats.

CON: Public smoking was a different sort of matter. One person’s vice was causing disease in the guy next to him. The situation with trans fats was different too. Removing those damaged trans fats didn’t harm businesses or change what people could order. However, with sweet drinks, just like prohibition, people will find a way to drink them. They will just refill their smaller glasses or buy sodas in stores. It is also an uneven enforcement because the ban doesn’t cover milkshakes or alcoholic beverages which can have just as much sugar. Restaurants make a very high profit margin on soft drinks and truthfully claim their business will be hurt. I value our freedoms and I don’t much like the government telling me what to drink.

However, my biggest concern is that so very often diet dictocrats just don’t have their facts straight–especially the federal government. Besides often operating on old unproven dogma, the bureaucrats are subject to pressure from economic interests and can create guidelines or even regulations that turn out to be just plain wrong. The Initial food pyramid is a great example. Never mind that it has since been revised twice, the principles it stood for are still assumed to be “fact”. Unfortunately, since its publication, we’ve gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. Apparently even in stylish NY, the balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade aren’t the only really large shapes going down the streets. Bloomberg’s motives are good and the target is a worthy one, but I think education will have a longer lasting effect.

LEARN ABOUT ENERGY MEDICINE FOR FREE
There are several very valuable training opportunities being offered around the country at no charge-several are in the DFW area. Attend one of the training sessions to learn about an important form of energy medicine. Avazzia makes highly effective micro-current devices used by physicians, chiropractors and other clinicians. No license is needed to offer treatments with the equipment. (Who knows, maybe a new career awaits.) Avazzia devices are also appropriate for home use if the consumer understands how to operate them for maximum benefit. This LINK has the dates times and details. (By the way, you might be most familiar with Avazzia because they are the company that makes Ezzlift, the non-surgical facelift device that is one of the sponsors our radio show.)

LAST WEEK
Trauma (either physical or emotional) can create lifelong adverse effects on health and well-being. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as experienced by the military is a dramatic example. The memories of trauma are locked in the right brain. However, talk therapy communicates with the left brain. Jerry Mungadze, PhD pioneered innovative techniques to communicate with the right brain and thereby speed healing. Listen to the archive of last week’s show. LINK
