Healthy by Nature radio show this week: Suzy Cohen, R.Ph., “America’s Pharmacist” explains how drugs deplete and sabotage nutrients as well as the health consequences. She wrote “The 24-Hour Pharmacist,” and “Drug Muggers.” (She will autograph that book at Natural HealthFest courtesy of Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics.) MS Cohen has been a guest on Dr. Oz, The View, The Doctors, Good Morning America and, the crowning achievement of her career, our show (KIDDING!). Her book, “Diabetes without Drugs” is the topic of her Keynote lecture at the event.) The ever dynamic Jordan Rubin, author of The Maker’s Diet also joins us. We discuss fermented foods and learn something interesting about Kombucha. Click here to find podcasts, show archives and ways to listen nationwide.
MOM’S NUTRITION = MORE THAN BABY’S HEALTH
It took almost 4 decades of repeated studies before the US Food and Drug Administration let women in on the secret that Folic Acid (a B vitamin) prevents most neural tube birth defects. There are studies today showing that other nutrients prenatally affect various aspects of the child’s health and even behavior. It just doesn’t seem sensible to wait decades for the bureaucrats to finally eliminate all doubt before taking action-especially if there is no debate that the nutrients in question are safe and otherwise helpful. The following studies are the ones that landed in my inbox in just the last few weeks:
Supplementing Omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy may reduce the infants’ eczema and allergy to eggs during the first year. (While she’s at it, Mom can also reduce her risk of many health problems, including depression.) LINK
Mom’s Vitamin D level is linked to the child’s language development up to 10 years of age. We’ve talked about many additional benefits of adequate vitamin D to the mom and, after all, adequate levels of Vitamin D is something we are naturally supposed to have anyway. LINK.
Fertility. Supplementing Vitamin E seems to help women with unexplained infertility. LINK.
The bottom line: It is a pretty simple concept. How can the mother build a perfect baby if she is missing some of the parts and/or her machinery isn’t in top form? Even more eyeopening-animal studies have shown that if the mother is deficient in the mineral zinc while she is pregnant, not only will the offspring have problems with their immune systems, those problems will take multiple generations to correct. (If momma somehow didn’t have good nutrition on board when making baby, she can at least start her kiddo out right with Cola as recommended in the vintage magazine “ad” below.*)
