Breast Cancer
The pink now appearing on football uniforms and even adorning the newly back-to-work referees is a reminder that October is breast cancer awareness month. In my article featured in the online magazine, Nutricula, I give 12 steps to prevent breast cancer and my wish for how the massive amounts of charity funds might be used . LINK
Absorbing fat soluble vitamins
An associate, Troy, asked me if there some way to improve the absorption of fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A and E. I suggested taking them along with a meal that contains fat because that is when the body will have produced the right digestive juices. For extra help I recommend a supplement of fat-digesting enzymes called Lypo Gold. It is made by what I consider the best enzyme company, Enzymedica, and can be found in health food stores nationwide.
A side order of arsenic?
You have probably heard that Consumer Reports recently called attention to tests showing that rice products contain an unacceptably high amount of the toxic element Arsenic. (Unlike their biased attack on supplements, this is a type of public service that the publisher does well.) There is arsenic found naturally in soil–more in some places than others. That results in many foods such as chicken, juices and baby foods containing more arsenic than we’d like.
Since the poisons lead and arsenic can be ingredients in pesticides (because they kill living things), I’m thinking that this may be yet another reason to buy organic food. The worry is also further support for my advice to eat a wide variety of foods. Virtually all foods, even raw produce, have pluses and minuses. (For example, the seeds in apples contain a cyanide compound. Too much soy is hard on thyroid function.) Fiber helps bind toxins like arsenic, so it would seem that the whole grain brown rice would be a better choice because white rice has had the fiber removed.
Curious about Cucumber
Bill and I always put cucumbers on our salads. One day he asked me if they have any nutritional value. I looked them up on a USDA database that I have at the bottom of this page of our website. LINK. One cup of peeled chopped cucumber (1/2 large cuke), has just 16 calories because it is mostly water. There is very little fiber, protein or fat in that vegetable. Surprisingly, a serving does contain roughly 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. The content of vitamin C is 4 mg and the most abundant mineral is potassium at 181 mg. I eat them peeled because the peeling may be covered in wax and the peel makes them harder to digest.
Last Week
Dr. Brian Nimphius explained why he is so excited about a micro-current device, Avazzia, that he uses it for nearly every patient. Dr. Nimphius is not only a well-respected chiropractor but also a fellow radio host (LINK). The book Judy Gray, MS discussed (with a forward by one of my heroes, Doris Rapp, MD) was Kids Need Care-Nutritional, Natural Remedies, and Life-Guidance. Her company (North American Herb and Spice ) goes to unbelievable lengths to harvest the best oregano from which to make their famous oregano oil. Oregano may be best known for helping to eliminate yeast overgrowth (even for chronic sinus trouble), but it is also a great pain reliever, is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
