Jim LaValle, R.Ph.,C.C.N. is author of Your Blood Never Lies: How to Read a Blood Test for a Longer, Healthier Life. He also wrote the best seller, Cracking the Metabolic Code: 9 Keys to Optimal Health. As a pharmacist, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, clinician and amazing investigator, he is well-qualified to speak on almost anything we could throw at him. But, why not talk about metabolic syndrome? Even if that name doesn’t ring a bell, surely you know someone with one, two or three of the component conditions: insulin insensitivity (pre-diabetes), blood pressure creeping up and the big one (no pun planned) being overweight. Left unchecked, these issues can lead to a whole lot of major trouble. Mr. LaValle brings good news about a variety of things you can do to reverse the trends and start feeling a lot better along the way. Do cell phones hurt us?
texting.png

The conference that I’m speaking to this weekend (see below) is focused on the health effects of the invisible energy waves all around us. One example of those waves is the ones emitted by cell phones. I used the picture above because it shows a very well-documented way that cell phones are killerswhen they are used for texting while driving. The National Safety Council stats show 1.6 million crashes annually are caused by cell phone use while driving. Everyone knows it is bad for other people to do, but so very tempting because we are more careful, right? Wrong. Distracted is distracted. Dialing the phone is also a distraction. Heck, even talking on the phone distracts focus from the tricky business of piloting a couple of tons of steel at high speed. I need this reminder as much as anyone, but the topic is also something I could do quickly and basically give myself the day off. You see, I am catching up from being gone for 5 days to a humongous natural products trade show. My Fitbit was happy with me because I walked 10,000 steps (about 5 miles) 4 of those days! So, no blog this week, just a friendly reminder to take care in the car.

Electromagnetic Field & Chronic Pain Symposium

THIS SATURDAY! We live in a sea of electromagnetic fields. But, do we have any idea what do they do to us? Experts in the field will examine that question Saturday, March 18 at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in Richardson. I am giving a talk about our beneficial bacteria at 2:45. The event is FREE and there will even be refreshments! Click here for schedule of other talks and more details.

Last Week Follow-up

LISTEN to that show in the archives.

What an interesting show. Anthony Thomas, PHD fills in some more blanks on vitamin K. For example, why we need it for more than helping guide calcium into bones instead of arteries (as though that isn’t enough). We also talk about why so many folks are not getting enough vitamin K and why we might want to supplement with 3 different types of it as is the case with Jarrow’s K-Right. Then psychiatrist Hyla Cass, MD and I talk about how she helps people with mental health issues and addictions by using natural supplements instead of psych drugs. She wrote a fascinating article in Huffington Post about how the perpetrators of grizzly crimes that we hear about in the news are often driven to bizarre acts by the side effects of psych medications. Her books include: The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free; Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time; Supplement Your Prescription: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Nutrition; and Eight Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women to Correct Imbalances, Reclaim Energy and Restore Well-Being. On her website, you can sign up for a free e-book, Reclaim Your Brain. I asked her about phone appointments and she said it would save money to just read the books which will tell you which of her supplements may help.
