FDA’s Fish Flip Flop

Healthy by Nature radio show this week
College students, executives and those learning the requirements of a new job would love to improve their concentration, mental energy, memory and mental performance…so would older persons who feel they’ve lost their edge, composers, writers, bridge players and anyone serious about their bible studies…I guess the question really is who does not need better mental function? Brain expert, Dr. Kyl Smith, will let us in on the secrets to achieving exactly that. Call the live show with questions at 1-800-281-8255. FDA Fish Flip Flop
Perhaps you heard on the news this week that the FDA now recommends that pregnant and nursing women eat more fish. Many will find this surprising since the agency’s previous advice to this group was to limit their intake of fish to avoid exposing the fetus to mercury found in seafood. This link is to the FDA’s current (tentative) position.

My issues with that FDA pronouncement
(1) The FDA is certainly correct that pregnant and nursing women need omega-3 fats. But they didn’t mention that so do the rest of us.

(2) Following this new advice will be tricky business for the expectant mom. She may need to carry around a list of which fish to purchase at the market and to order in a restaurant. What if she or her family do not like fish? Would it kill these bureaucrats to say that it is okay to supplement with fish oil in the context of a healthful diet?

(3) FDA does not seem to worry about mercury for the rest of us. They acknowledge that mercury is a horrible poison which, according to the EPA, damages brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and the immune system…of all age persons. But, for some reason, the FDA implies that getting a disease-causing body burden is okay as long as we do so gradually rather than all at once. We already are exposed to mercury (contamination of the air by old coal-fired power plants, cement kilns, water, amalgam dental fillings, broken fluorescent light bulbs, vaccines, old paint, some pesticides and various consumer products).  So, it seems logical for all of us to do our best to avoid unnecessary exposure to mercury and that includes paying attention to which fish are the safest.

I guess that one of the problems with following government advice is that they sound just as authoritative when they are wrong as when they are right.

Congratulations!
Our granddaughter, Kayla Leggett, graduated from high school with honors last Saturday. Kayla, we are so proud of you!
See if you can tell where she is going to college from the clue in this cake I made for her.
