MEAT MATTERS
Surely you have heard in the news lately that eating red meat is supposed to bad for you. One day soon I’ll tell you what I think is missing in that advice. But for the moment, I will just call your attention to a study showing that NOT eating enough red meat might lead to depression. LINK. The study was done in Australia where the bulk of beef is grass-fed. As we’ve discussed before, that does make a difference. Among other things, grass fed meat is higher in the omega 3 fats that have been shown beneficial for depression. Another study hints that a mineral, Rubidium, that is found in red meat may be a factor in improving mood. LINK. As author Fran Lebowitz is quoted as saying, “My favorite animal is steak.”

ASPIRIN
Aspirin has also been in the news due to new evidence that it may be helpful in prevention of cancer. LINK. This cheap medication may even be useful in preventing distant cancer metastasis. LINK. The dark side of aspirin which the proponents are conveniently downplaying is that thousands of aspirin users die each year from bleeding. Aspirin helps largely because it is an anti-inflammatory. Fortunately there are a great number of anti-inflammatory nutrients that are far safer-vitamin C, vitamin E, phyto-nutrients from vegetables and herbs like turmeric, etc. We could also stop doing things that cause inflammation for example smoking, taking in chemicals, eating too much sugar and excess omega 6 oils. So, take two fish oil and call me in the morning.
