Healthy by Nature radio show this week
Several of my favorite topics will be covered in this week’s veritable buffet of health information. Our bodies need water more urgently than anything but oxygen. Derek Mellencamp will tell us all the toxins that remain in water even after municipal processing and how to get rid of them with the filter my family uses. I’ll introduce you to holistic dentist, Phillip R. Kozlow, because what goes on in the mouth can have a profound effect on the rest of the body. Dr. Joel Speers will explain the difference between the common relaxing massage and the more therapeutic medical massage which is typically covered by insurance. As if that wasn’t enough, Chris Miles, builder/remodeler of green and healthy homes joins us with tips on reducing indoor pollution.Call the live show with questions (Dagnabit. Darned software keeps turning the phone number into a skype logo and repeats the number messing things up. So resorting to this:) One eight hundred-281-eighty two 55. A Wholesome Trend in Washington, DC???
It is so very easy to find fault with the federal government because legislators and regulators are disproportionately influenced by big money interests such as pharmaceutical companies and agribusiness. In last week’s email I weighed in on the Food and Drug Administration’s proposed changes to the Nutrition Facts (and FDA Opinions) panel on food labels. Surprisingly, I agreed with about half of what they suggested. This week there is a little good news in the Farm Bill.
In the past, the agricultural subsidies and crop insurance support in this powerful bill went in large measure to benefit giant companies and millionaire farmers of commodities like soy, corn and sugar. Happily, consumer interests are starting to have an effect! This farm bill sends at least some love to organic farmers, beginning farmers, fruits and vegetables, the environment and community food programs. LINK. Hopefully those trends will continue to grow.
Ginormous Trade Show
I just got back from an impossibly big natural products trade show in Anaheim, CA. It was fun seeing old friends, doing book signings, filming interviews for our upcoming television show (more on that some day soon) and meeting with sponsors. There were literally thousands of exhibits. Not all of their offerings are winners. For example, if they just take the gluten out of junk food, it is still junk food. I saw again how daunting it is for consumers to sort out all the claims for products and ingredients and to assess quality. That served as a good reminder of why we work so hard on the Healthy by Nature show to do that research for you and bring you the best sponsors.

Last Week Follow-up
LINK to that show in the archives. A favorite guest, Parris Kidd, PhD, discussed a crucially important but often forgotten B-vitamin, folate, which is also known as folic acid. The active form of folate protects us from cell divisions going wrong and a multitude of problems such as those with birth defects, mood, memory and circulation. Apparently, a significant portion of the population has a genetically determined inability to turn the food type of this vitamin (folate) into the required active form, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate.
