Reduce inflammatory fats / Gray hair question

Healthy by Nature radio show this week: Sherry A. Rogers, M.D. returns to discuss her latest book, How to Cure Diabetes. She says: “Yes, you really can. The Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine state that taking diabetes medications not only fails to prolong life, but actually increases heart disease, cancers, and Alzheimer’s. And compared with taking nothing, they actually increase the risk of death 22%.” We will talk about the hidden causes of diabetes, and how to reverse the disease. We would also love to hear from you with your questions. Dr. Rogers is the author of a number of books including “Is your Cardiologist Killing You?” and “Pain Free in 6 Weeks“. Getting the Fat Facts
On the May 25th program, Artemis Simopoulos, MD covered some extremely important information about the fats and oils in our diets. During the show I offered to provide some additional information in this newsletter and I don’t want it to be missed down below in the Last Week Section.

Ideally, pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats are balanced with nearly equal amounts of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats. However, the modern American diet has become quite imbalanced. We get roughly 20 times as much omega-6 as omega-3. Doesn’t it seem likely that this is a major factor in the large upswing in chronic diseases caused by inflammation? Also, the fact that omega-3’s offset the ill effects of excess omega-6 probably explains why omega-3’s are credited with helping so many disease conditions and reducing the risk of death from all causes.

Most of us need to reduce the amount of omega-6 oils we ingest. It will help to avoid or at least cut back on the cooking oils that are high in omega-6 mainly: corn, soy, safflower and sunflower. Also, because those oils are inexpensive, they are used in most processed foods. So, we have to read labels. To raise the omega-3 side of the teeter-totter we need to eat more fish, flax and/or supplement with high quality fish oils. (If they taste fishy, they are not fresh.)

Test your blood levels of omegas and then you won’t be guessing what you need. Here is a link to a test (omega3test.com) that you can do at home and mail in. Enter the code Martie 49.99 and you can get the test (list price $200) for just $49.99. That great deal is thanks to the supplement maker, Nordic Naturals.

Dr. Simopoulos discussed the Bellagio Report which is the result of an international conclave aimed at improving worldwide health by encouraging policy makers to help balance intake of these fatty acids and to reduce the intake of fructose (the sugar in high fructose corn syrup). Here is the link to that report.

Why can’t Gray just be the New Blond?
Q. Mary asked: Gray hair has recently been linked to elevated Hydrogen Peroxide levels within the body. Is there a supplement and/or vitamin to reduce the level to reduce or eliminate the “grays”?

A. Mary is right that peroxide not only bleaches hair from the outside, it is also believed to do that from the inside. Unstable oxygen molecules such as hydrogen peroxide are neutralized by antioxidant nutrients like A, C, E, and the minerals that work with them such as zinc and selenium. B vitamins are known to help prevent gray hair. Also, I’ve heard nutrition author, Bill Sardi, say that most of his natural hair color returned when he started taking Longevinex. By the way, unless they just recently changed the ingredients, I’d avoid Grecian Formula because it uses the toxic metal lead to make the gray go away.

What’s up?
Health Professionals nationwide and the public in the DFW area may be interested in the Integrative Lyme Solutions Conference, Dallas, Texas, June 21-22, 2013. It covers the great many conditions that are given other diagnoses but are really due to Lyme’s disease. Treatments are also discussed. The symposium is sponsored by The Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine. Here is the link to their site. LINK. Or you can call Lisa Wade at 469-235-5815. The lay session for the public is that Saturday 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Advance tickets for that are $20 or $30 at the door.

LINK to Archive. I interviewed the amazing Artemis Simopoulos, MD, international authority on genetics and fats in our diet. She is also the author of The Omega Diet. We talked about omega-3’s, omega-6’s and the balance of those two and other basics. I think this one is a classic.
