Vitamin C in the news?
I’m guessing that the following startling research result did not make it into your newspaper.
Nutrition journalist, Bill Sardi, called my attention to a study done at Columbia University that recorded blood serum vitamin C levels over 14 years in a population of 16,000. For those of us in the nutrition field, the findings were no surprise—the more vitamin in the blood, the lower the person’s risk of dying from any cause. The improvement in risk between the highest and lowest blood levels was quite significant—45%.
So how does a person get the higher levels? Mr. Sardi noted that “The American diet provides ~110 milligrams of vitamin C per day which achieves blood concentrations that vary widely depending upon factors such as smoking, diabetes, aspirin use and stress.” So, based on previous studies of the blood levels that are achieved with diet alone, it is almost certain that those with the higher levels were taking supplements.
Can you show me a drug that will help healthy people reduce their risk of dying from all causes combined (e.g. cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, etc.)? If there were, it would certainly be front page news.
Which C?
I recommend vitamin C complex supplements that contain bioflavonoids because they keep C in the body longer and are protective of capillaries. Usually, complexes such as C plus bioflavonoids or vitamin E with whole family of Tocopherols (Jarrow FamilE) work better than the isolated parts. Those complexes are more similar to what naturally occurs in food.
Dosage is another issue. Since each person’s chemistry and habits are unique, the arbitrary cookie cutter pronouncements are not very helpful. Most people do not get tested for vitamin C. Since the water soluble vitamin is so safe, it seems smarter to go with high doses than low doses. And to go higher yet if you have a lot of bad habits. The FDA’s recommendation of 60 mg per day might be enough to keep the average person from getting scurvy. A more realistic starting recommendation might be 500 mg twice a day. To get the most out of your supplement, take it with Lily of the Desert’s aloe juice–a study showed 20 times more vitamin C was absorbed with it than with water.
