More than Skin Deep
Flim flam? Is it just my experience or do most dermatologists treat every skin complaint as a deficiency of cortisone cream? Holistic dermatologists who know that the skin is connected to the rest of the body seem to be rare. Here are some alternate approaches to common issues:

Persistent skin irritation. If you think you are not reacting to body care products or something you use in the laundry, the cause of your rash might be food sensitivity. Try a change in the diet. For example, stay off of grains (especially wheat, rye and barley) for a couple of weeks and see if it improves. Improving the gut environment usually reduces food sensitivities. Meanwhile, soothe topically with Aloe vera.

Psoriasis. This is a chronic inflammatory condition. Therefore, reducing inflammatory foods such as sugar and vegetable oils that are high in omega-6 fatty acids (as well as the processed foods that use them) will help as will getting more of the anti-inflammatory foods (vegetables) and supplements (antioxidants, magnesium and fish oil). With anything chronic like this, again think gut. Improving the balance of good to harmful intestinal critters is often helpful as is taking Aloe vera internally. Aloe supports good bacteria, is anti-inflammatory and helps heal the tissues. (It also helps absorption of your other supplements.) Psoriasis is also associated with low vitamin D. Meanwhile, soothe and heal the skin topically with Aloe vera.

Rosacea. This is a condition of redness on the face that is often accompanied by bumps or blisters . I got the idea for today’s topic from a letter to the People’s Pharmacy newspaper column. A reader claimed to have gotten more help from Aloe vera than anything else he or she had ever tried. The authors cited a study that supports the use of natural treatments like Aloe for several skin conditions.

The skin reflects what is going on inside the body. For example, when the body tries to expel toxins of various kinds they may come through the skin and leave irritation in their path. Drinking Aloe vera has been shown to help reduce toxins in the blood.

Beginning to see a pattern here?
Yes, you can help your skin from the inside and the outside with Aloe vera. Unfortunately, not all Aloe products contain therapeutic amounts of the magic constituent, polysaccharides. These complexes have different effects depending on the length of the molecular chains. Unfortunately, rough handling and unsophisticated processing of Aloe leaves by most companies break the long chains of polysaccharides into simple sugars.

I recommend Lily of the Desert Aloe vera products because they grow their own leaves organically and control every step thereafter until it is bottled. This vertical integration not only yields superior quality and top-rated polysaccharide content, but also keeps their prices very moderate. Lily is one of few supplement companies that conduct clinical trials on their products. When purchasing topical skin care products based on aloe, for the best results and optimum moisturizing, be sure to get one containing at least 30% Aloe. (Some have only a hint.) Lily’s is 99% aloe and works like a charm!
