William J. Rea, M.D., is a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, but he may be better known as an expert in the environmental aspects of health and disease. He is also the author of several textbooks. I owe Dr. Rea a great deal for all I have learned from him over several decades. He is the founder and Director of the Environmental Health Center (EHC-D) in Dallas. (That is a place where doctors from around the world send the patients that they just cannot figure out how to help.) We will start with the negative health effects of chemicals we encounter. The new frontier is understanding how electromagnetic frequencies affect us. He is one of the organizers of the March 18th EMF event listed on our events page.

Electromagnetic Field & Chronic Pain Symposium

We live in a sea of electromagnetic fields. But, do we have any idea what do they do to us? A symposium will examine that question Saturday March 18 at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in Richardson. I am honored to be one of the speakers…among others that are mostly MD’s and PHD’s. The event is FREE and there will even be refreshments! Click here for more details.

About 50 million American adults are grappling with chronic and severe pain and the annual treatment cost has been estimated at $635 billion. That exceeds the combined cost for treatment of cancer, heart disease and diabetes! A substantial amount of scientific evidence confirms that exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) can affect pain sensitivity. Unfortunately, most health care providers and the public are not well informed about the association between EMF exposure and pain. The current epidemic of addiction to prescriptive pain killers has been attributed to our limited understanding of the underlying causes of chronic pain and the environmental risk factors. UTD and the American Environmental Health Foundation are co-sponsoring the symposium to discuss the link between EMF and chronic pain.

Would you like health care plans to cover supplements?

There is turmoil in Washington DC over how to fix the parts of Obamacare that are not working. Don’t let DC forget what may be the most important part—prevention of diseases. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and/or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are options to be included in the revised health care plans. We can help promote prevention by supporting legislation that will allow folks to buy dietary supplements with their HSA or FSA.

Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah and Rep. Erik Paulsen of Minnesota hope to pass a bill that will do just that. The bills are: The Health Savings Act of 2017, S.403 (Senate) and H.R.1175 (House). Click here to make your opinion known. That will make it easy to ask your U.S. Senators and Representatives to support this legislation. These bills will help families have more freedom in how they spend the health care dollars. Tell your lawmakers that prevention of disease is the very best kind of health care reform.

5 Signs That Sugar Is Aging Your Face

Some folks may not care much that the cells in their internal organs are becoming caramelized. But, perhaps they would like to know that the effects of too much sugar can also show up on their faces.

  1. The surface of your skin looks hard and shiny.
  2. Deep, crosshatch lines appear along your upper lip.
  3. Discoloration and hyper-pigmentation mark the skin.
  4. Deep crevices appear, especially around the laugh line area.
  5. Skin around the jowl area is sagging.

I didn’t compile this list from research. Glambo Lily Day Spa in Frisco, TX sent it and went on to explain:Sugar bonds with proteins in your body in a process called glycation. These sugar-bonded proteins produce free radicals which destroy your collagen and elastin, the building blocks that keep your skin strong and supple. They also harden collagen and elastin, and prevent the body from making more. All these effects mean your skin loses its elasticity, lines and wrinkles start to set in, and signs of aging become more visible.” This all does make perfect sense in the context of studies I’ve seen. The spa was hoping to sell you a topical skin care product which is fine, but we’d better also get to the root of the problem which is over-consumption of sugars.

Last Week Follow-up

LISTEN to that show in the archives.

One of our favorite guests, Rich Snyder, DO has a new book: What You Must Know About Liver Disease: A Practical Guide to Using Conventional and Complementary Treatments. Modern life takes a toll on the liver, an organ that we may not appreciate until is stops doing its job properly. The same is true of our kidneys. Unless you’ve had a kidney stone, you might even forget that you own them. We also talked today and on an archived show about Dr. Snyder’s earlier book, What You Must Know About Kidney Disease: A Practical Guide to Using Conventional and Complementary Treatments. He was on the show a while back talking about his workbook: Your Personal Prescription Checklist: How to Maximize Medication Safety and Efficacy in the Age of Personalized Medicine. Archive interview on Adrenal Fatigue: related book, Adrenal Fatigue For Dummies .
