Surprising contributor to body fat

Healthy by Nature radio show this week: Two herbal experts and Dr. Paula Strait join us to discuss how most common underarm deodorants interfere with one of our body’s important detoxification pathways and possibly increase the risk of cancer.  On the lighter side we investigate another type that actually promotes detoxification.  Even more interesting, these herbalists have discovered how to use the same principles to reduce belly fat…yes from the outside. SUFFERING SODA SAGA
Mayor Bloomberg stirred up a hornet’s nest with his proposal to reduce obesity by banning large size sweet drinks from being sold in any establishment that requires a food permit. (Apparently New Yorkers don’t like being told what to drink any more now than they did during prohibition.) Since the smaller glasses can simply be endlessly refilled, it all seems a little pointless. Worse yet, the regulations may have the unintended consequence of encouraging more people to drink diet soft drinks which are not included in the ban. Here is an interesting article on why that may not be such a great idea. LINK.

SPEAKING OF BODY FAT
(This item applies to everyone, so don’t let the beginning throw you off.) Unless you saw the news on this new study, it might surprise you to learn that kids have a more than twice the chance of being obese by age 3 if they are born by Caesarian Section rather than the natural way. LINK. How could that be? The cause appears to be a difference in intestinal bacteria. Children passing through the birth canal are naturally inoculated with their mother’s friendly bacteria (a.k.a. “flora” or “probiotics”). LINK. Children were also more likely to be overweight if given antibiotics as children even if they were born the natural way. LINK.

Our friendly bacteria perform dozens of important jobs for us (my article) and apparently some of those in turn help us maintain normal weight. It has been shown in studies that obese adults have a different assortment of bacteria than slim folks. As you long time readers know, I’m a fan of Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics as a regular supplement for digestive health. Now we have yet another reason to make it a part of our health fundamentals.

Sometimes an emergency requires a C-Section, so how can a mom give the infant a good start on building colonies of intestinal bacteria given that infants can’t swallow even the tiny Dr. Ohhira’s capsules? Here is what many smart moms do: they routinely squeeze out the paste from a capsule of Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics and spread it on either their own nipple if breast feeding (hopefully) or on the nipple of the baby bottle.

Oddly enough, in a review of Brazilian studies, that link with C-sections and childhood obesity wasn’t seen. LINK. Of course, the overall obesity rate is just 1/3 of what it is in the US. The activity level and diet are also much different in Brazil. Probably babies don’t snack on little cheese crackers shaped like fish or have cola in their baby bottles as we sometimes see here. (EEEK!)  However, I’m guessing the difference is also due to Brazilian children having more ways of being exposed to beneficial bacteria. In the US we tend to sterilize everything and not let children play in the dirt outside, etc.
