John Young, MD will tell us a funny story about a patient and a witch doctor but, more importantly how to build a great foundation for health. I want to ask him about recent studies I’ve seen showing that we are not getting enough protein. He has a new book, Beyond Treatment. Yoanna Kanalakis has a book also, Secrets to Looking Young Naturally so we can add a pretty face to the healthy body that Dr. Young will help us build. Yoanna is always a hoot. You can worry yourself sick
Studies have long shown that chronic stress worsens our health. But, a recent study showed that just watching stressful situations on the news can do the same…especially if taken to what I would call an extreme. Researchers studied the effect of news surrounding the Boston Marathon bombings and found that “six or more daily hours of bombing-related media exposure in the week after the bombings was associated with higher acute stress than direct exposure to the bombings.” I can’t help think about the effect of the recent media barrage on Ebola. While practically speaking no one except the immediate caregivers of a critically ill Ebola patient have any chance of catching the disease, watching to much of the news about it might make us sick.
He who smelt it dealt it.
This saying might not be so old (and admittedly it is a bit crude) but, it turns out to have an interesting connection to health. Scientists from England believe that a substance which emanates in the odor of rotten eggs and noxious human toots may protect the important little powerhouses of our cells (mitochondria) from damage. That in turn would protect us from a variety of degenerative diseases such as high blood pressure to name just one. Time article and the Study. Of course, I suspect that those researchers may be moving toward a synthetic version that they can patent. Happily, the beneficial smell is liberated from sulfur-containing foods like eggs, broccoli and garlic by our good bacteria. So, the home grown solution might just be to eat healthy and take probiotics. That transitions nicely to the next item…
Knowledge is power!
(Francis Bacon nailed that one, didn’t he.) Are you one of the 60% of Americans dealing with one of these: constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, gas, bloating or candida? These can lead from merely annoying to serious health problems. Conventional medicine may be a couple of decades behind the latest research. Learn what you need to know to have power over the problems by participating in a FREE online event called The Digestion Sessions. It features 25 expert video interviews and gut-healing cooking classes. Click here for a sneak peek and to register. It starts November 9th!
Last Week Follow-up
LISTEN to that show in the archives. I asked Andrew Shepherd, DC about what things we do in everyday life that cause us structural problems and how chiropractic actually heals the cause of disease rather than just calm symptoms. Why would an infant who was delivered by caesarian section need an immediate adjustment? Is anyone too old to see a chiropractor? I also inquired about the qualifications and training of chiropractors. Then Jonathan Clinthorne, PhD (of Natural Grocers) and I talked about pluses, minuses and myths regarding the Paleo diet. I also asked him what we can do to minimize the health damage we do to ourselves over the holidays.
