Vitamin A – a “redheaded stepchild”?

We will discuss why fermented foods are important, how to get started making them at home or what to buy if you prefer that someone else to do the fermenting. My guest is Nancy Lee Bentley, author of Truly Cultured. We also visit with John Willard about exciting new research into why Willard Water works so well. DHEA follow up
Most people probably appreciate DHEA because it helps with hair, skin, nails, sleep, energy, libido and stress effects as well as for its slimming and rejuvenating properties. On the show last week I promised to include here the link to the recent study on how DHEA reduces the risk of cardiovascular risk. Here is that one. This is another on reduction of deaths from all causes: LINK. And, another linking low DHEA with stroke in women: LINK. At first during my interview with Hugh Woodward, I guessed the wrong discount code, so please note the correct one, nature. (all lower case). Use that to save 20% (even on top of the quantity discounts) when you call 1-888-489-4782 or order online. I’d hate to think a listener missed out on the benefits of Twist 25 because they missed the deal. Also, Hugh has been a supporter of the show and Natural HealthFest for a long time and I want to make sure that we’ve right by Twist 25.

What is new is old again
Husband Bill found a yellowing copy of a 1932 Literary Digest among some of his grandmother’s belongings. He showed me an article entitled “Vitamins Not for Colds”. The article quoted the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) as saying basically that silly people will hang onto their quaint beliefs about vitamins helping to prevent or treat colds, but there is no evidence. They did note that vitamin A helped the health of the mucous membranes-the ones that line the sinuses and lungs…in mice.

Today, a search of PubMed for vitamin “A + respiratory” returns 837 journal articles. I like this quote from a recent review of studies: “Vitamin A deficiency is a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases.”

Does that mean that in 82 years a lot has changed? Practically speaking, no, not much. No one ever tells me that their doctor makes sure that they get enough vitamin A. Also, the media still sings the same old song about vitamins being useless. They do so because that is still the official position of the government and the medical trade groups like the AMA.(And what about the billions they earn from drug advertising?) By the way, that 1932 article also disparaged Vitamin D. Thankfully, doctors do now pay some attention to that one.

Last Week Follow-up
LISTEN to that show in the archives. Research on hormones has left most folks a little bit confused. We talked about bio-identical hormones and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in particular. Not only its benefits in middle age and beyond but also why supplementing it through the skin is the preferred way. My first guest, Hugh Woodward, MS of Twist 25 helped us understand. Then, producer and periodic guest host, Andy Hopkins, took over the microphone and asked me some questions about Aloe vera and fats.
