Healthy by Nature radio show this week
Mark Schatzker is the author of a very interesting new book, The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor. We discuss what has happened to food flavors over the decades in the pursuit of higher yields, pest resistance, transportability and other such commercial factors. He also has good news about the future.

Who doesn’t among us want more clarity, better focus and memory? (I’m guessing that Stephen Hawking is not one of our subscribers.) We can help our brains with better nutrition, restful sleep, exercise, drinking enough water, etc. but also with a fine supplement. Martie’s Picks
There is a section of the show’s website home page that you might not have noticed. Down at the bottom there is a heading, Martie’s Picks, where I post items of interest…well, I intend to, but had gotten out of the habit. I recently added an item about a free report on 12 Hormone-Altering Chemicals and How to Avoid Them from the Environmental Working Group.
Today I added one linking to information that as many as 500,000 seniors may be dying each year in the developed world from use of psychiatric medications such as anti-depressants. Very interesting and important information.

Chocolate confusion
After reading an editorial blurb in our local paper about the health effects of chocolate, I hastily wrote a letter to the editor chiding them for not mentioning that the benefits are in dark chocolate not just any old chocolate bar. That has been the rule, but well, as it turns out, the new study didn’t make that distinction either. Oops. I had to rephrase my comments. There is some modest antioxidant content in milk chocolate, but often too much sugar and sometimes Trans fats. The subjects of the recent study were English and it is possible that they are accustomed to a better grade of chocolate (e.g. German and Dutch chocolates) with more cocoa content. So, I still recommend high quality chocolate (darker is better) and not what you find in vending machines.
Last Week Follow-up
LISTEN to that show in the archives.
There is more and more news about artificial sweeteners and none of it is good! My First guest has been a pioneer in sounding the alarm for decades. Dr. Janet Starr Hull, PhD, CN is the author of Sweet Poison: How the World’s Most Popular Artificial Sweetener Is Killing Us – My Story (Aspartame); Splenda: Is it Safe or Not?; and The Richardson Cancer Prevention Diet: A Nutrition and Diet Regimen for the Prevention of Cancer. She teaches at Texas A&M University and writes a monthly health blog.
At the end of the show I gave some tips on traveling healthier and in more comfort. In between I quized Bobbi Vitality about how people use Vitality FX Essential to achieve such great results on a wide variety of challenges.
