Moldy corn makes the news

A radio show reported today that corn farmers in the Panhandle of Texas have a big financial problem because of mold on corn. The reporters made it sound unlikely there would be any health problem for consumers, but I don’t agree.

Apparently, the weather this year has increased the amount of fumonisin on the corn crops. Fumonisin is a poison (mycotoxin) created by fungus. The corn in the photo above doesn’t look moldy, however, the only way to know is with testing. Most Panhandle corn is used for animal feed and a small percentage gets directly into consumer products. When the level of the toxin becomes so high that it could poison farm animals, the price of the commodity goes down. That is obviously bad for the corn farmer’s income. It is less obvious why it is also a problem for us.

  • According to the government database (Pubmed.com) fumonisin causes many diseases in humans—problems such as cancer, liver disease and birth defects. As we’ve discussed many times (with powerful reminders by Doug Kaufmann of Know the Cause), even the mycotoxins produced by yeast in our own intestinal tracts can cause a wide variety of health complaints. Since we now know that mycotoxins damage our all-important friendly bacteria, I expect that most every aspect of health is at risk from mold poisons.
  • They say “don’t worry”. Those with an economic interest say that fumonisin just passes through the animals and doesn’t affect the end food product or humans that eat them. That makes no sense at all. The mycotoxin cannot damage the liver and other organs of the animal unless it becomes incorporated into its tissues. Note: the government has no standard for how much fumonisin is allowed in the finished food and does not test for it.
  • Cattle ranchers or dairy, pig and poultry farmers surely wouldn’t knowingly buy grain that can sicken their animals. And yet, somehow, that contaminated grain still gets sold…just at a lower price.
  • Even in years with normal weather (is there such a thing in Texas?), mold contamination of grains is still a problem. Also, additional mold grows while grains spend endless months in silos.

Other concerns about corn as animal feed:

  • Corn is not the natural diet of any farm animal. It increases the levels of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats in their meat, milk and eggs. Meanwhile it reduces the amount of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats. It isn’t smart anymore to brag about corn-fed beef. The corn does fatten them up (and us). Bragging rights go to pasture-fed beef. I also recommend milk from pasture-fed dairy cows. (Note, “grass fed” may mean a life of eating corn and a little time on grass at the very end. That bit helps, but it is not the same.)
  • In the US, 88% percent of corn grown is genetically modified (GMO). My recent article about GMO crops notes that the practice produces pesticide chemicals in the grain and encourages the use of Roundup type (glyphosate) weed killers. Glyphosate is now also commonly sprayed even on non-GMO crops to dry out the stalks making harvest easier.

Americans eat about 24 pounds of corn a year not counting what we get indirectly from animal foods. Organic corn at least protects us from GMO strains and residues of pesticides and weed killers. Unfortunately, even organic grain can still have mold residues. And, corn may still be fattening because of its effect on blood sugar and it can cause inflammation because of lectins it contains. Although we may love us some nachos, as hard as it is to believe, we have no nutritional requirement for grains. Until the advent of farming, our ancestors did not eat it.

Find cancer early. Test treatments

toxic treatments

Find cancer early. Test treatments–good news. During last week’s radio show we visited with Jenny Hrbacek RN, author of Cancer Free! Are You Sure? and Gus Kotsanis, MD about the very early detection of cancer, its re-occurrence and integrative treatments. I highly recommend that everyone read Jenny’s book. It contains valuable information about all aspects of cancer including prevention, very early clues and how better to know what kind of treatment might be best. I asked her to be my first guest blogger this week to follow up with some bare-bones highlights on testing out of her book. Take it away, Jenny:

“As of 2015, during their lifetime, 50% of men and 40% of women will receive a cancer diagnosis. We can’t hide from cancer anymore. Even as a nurse, after my own diagnosis, I spent three years looking for answers. I found that we can indeed do better!

Early detection. It seems unbelievable that we are not utilizing the very best in early detection testing for cancer. I hope that you know that I am not talking about mammograms or PSA counts. We absolutely don’t have to wait for the lump or bump.  In my book, I describe about 27 different tests.  Some are specific to identifying certain cancers; some find malignancy early; and others detect conditions that can lead to cancer.  I explain each test; how to get it, how much it costs; the benefits, limitations and more.  Here are a few you might want to check into:  RGCC Oncocount, RGCC Oncostat, ONCOblot, CA Profile Plus, Red Drop, Nagalase, EarlyCDT, Cologuard, hCG, and an occult blood stool test. It can be tempting to put our heads in the sands of ignorance and just hope that we are okay, but let me just say that a  late stage diagnosis of cancer can be tragic and financially debilitating. I encourage everyone to insist on the very best testing available in order to find cancer very early when it’s much easier to stop and reverse—many times without toxic therapies.

Metastasis: During the show, we talked about circulating tumor cells (CTC’s). These cells are the key to early warning of spreading. We know that any tumor over 2 mm in size can shed these CTC’s into the blood stream. There is an FDA and insurance approved test for CTC’s called “Cell Search”. This is NOT an early detection test because the cancer must have already spread to other organs for this test to detect CTC’s. Therefore, it is used if a metastasis of breast, colon, or prostate cancer is already suspected by the doctor. I wanted to address this because I don’t want anyone to get the Cell Search CTC test and think that a “zero” CTC count means that they don’t have a cancer problem.  If you want to get a much more sensitive test of CTC’s, I suggest RGCC, Research Genetic Cancer Center in Greece.  There are many practitioners in the U.S. that use this test. Go to www.RGCCUSA.com for more information. [Martie note: Click here to listen to an archived interview we did on this test with guests Dr. Kotsanis and Dr. Hammon.]

Treatment options: You have probably heard of people that did not respond to various treatments or as I put it, “failed therapy”. We don’t have to guess any more or use cookie cutter plans of treatment because sensitivity testing is available for both mainstream chemotherapeutic agents and for natural substances. I used a test called “Oncostat” which is also from RGCC. As an example, my testing showed that IV vitamin C was 65% effective for killing my CTC’s. I used that treatment for 6 months and it worked!  I was able to lower my CTC’s from 14.2 to 2.9. There are other companies that require a piece of the tumor for analysis to predict sensitivity levels. However, the RGCC test that I used only requires a blood sample and works with the living CTC’s. I also recommend the RGCC test because it can find these CTC’s before there is a tumor large enough to biopsy for a tissue sample.

There is so much more that I would like to share.  I was really surprised to learn how many options exist. I’ve done the research and packaged up the information in my book.  I just pray that it gets into the hands of those that need the information…information that I wish that I had known about years ago!

Thank you to Martie and Dr. Kotsanis for inviting me to share this message. Wishing you abundant health, Jenny”

Thank YOU, Jenny for your tremendous book and taking time to write this.

Manganese versus magnesium

Healthy by Nature radio show this week

Jenny Hrbacek RN, author of Cancer Free! Are You Sure? will join Gus Kotsanis, MD and I in the studio. It is a live show, so we can take your calls on anything related to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and re-occurrence of any type cancer

Too much or too little — both cause trouble
flood cracks

Wildfires blacken already parched earth in the West. Meanwhile, floods often sweep homes from their soggy earth moorings in the East. And yet, on the average, the US probably has perfectly fine water levels. Unfortunately, the same misleading statistical analysis exists with health and nutrition.

For example, too often dietary guidelines are set based on averages of masses of human beings who are, in the truest sense of the word, each unique.

Balance and matching to the individual’s need are critical to optimum health, but require us to pay attention to what is going on with our bodies. Have you noticed that houseplant leaves can turn yellow with either too much water or too little? Similarly, people can suffer symptoms with too much of a nutrient that are similar to those they might experience with too little. Read my blog about issues with the mineral manganese (no, that isn’t a misspelling of magnesium) and something funny at the end.

Last Week Follow-up

LISTEN to that show in the archives.  It is the mission of HBN to responsibly examine minority views because in the long run those so often turn out to be a better path than the direction the mainstream is marching lockstep. During our panel discussion about vaccines, we did not spend time on the status quo pro-vaccine side of the debate since that is continually crammed down our throats by the media and the medical establishment. We discussed some of documented concerns with the current vaccine plans; more conservative approaches to regular immunizations and an intriguing homeopathic alternative, homeoprophylaxis. We focused on children, but many of the same principles apply to adults to whom a variety of immunizations are marketed.

Fungus–a Cause of Cancer

We’ve known for a long time that fungus in our system can cause headaches, joint pain, depression, rashes, menstrual issues, sugar cravings, fatigue, chemical sensitivity and virtually any kind of GI complaint including heartburn. My friend, Doug Kaufmann, host of the popular television show, Know the Cause, is the lead author along with two physicians of a wonderful article about how fungus can cause cancer. Fungus releases mycotoxin poisons and that is one way they can cause cancer. He makes a good case that sometimes fungus problems are misdiagnosed as cancer. It is well known that aflatoxin (an example of a mycotoxin) on grain can cause cancer of the liver. Doug says that corn and peanuts are among the worst culprits for being contaminated with fungus toxins. Unfortunately, cooking may kill the fungus but does not destroy the mycotoxins the fungus has released. (I’ve found in my research that aflatoxin can even be found in the milk from cows fed contaminated grains. That is another good reason for buying from farmers that feed their animals on grass.) Just to be clear, yeasts are a type of fungus. He also explains how fungus (yeasts) in our systems can produce similar mycotoxin poisons that circulate through the body to potentially create trouble almost anywhere. Doug has often mentioned that drugs and natural substances with anti-fungal effects have beneficial effects in cancer treatment. Congratulations on this achievement, Mr. Kaufmann.

Problems with fungus are much better known in the form of discolored toe nails, athlete’s foot and vaginal yeast infections. What is less understood is that fungus in the body can sabotage almost any system and do so for decades if not stopped. Most often problems start after a round of antibiotics. A fungus overgrowth can crowd out our friendly microorganisms (probiotics) that function like one of our organs. Among the many benefits of our probiotics is that they fight cancer. One thing that fungus mycotoxins do is to suppress the immune system, which could set us up for any number of problems, not the least of which is cancer. It probably doesn’t help that fungus can make us crave starches and sweets. Those in turn also slow down the immune system. Even worse, cancer cells love sugar.

Fungus can cause chronic sinus infections and it is also a major contributor to leaky gut which causes us to absorb fewer nutrients and more toxic substances. This condition may lead to autoimmune problems. Of course, we want to keep fungus from causing cancer, but we also want to stop fungus from sapping our health and vitality. My yeast questionnaire will help readers decide if fungus might be the cause of some of their symptoms and my article about fungus explains how yeasts get a foothold and what to do about them without accidentally harming our crucial probiotics. That is a real concern because a lot of even natural substances used to kill fungus can also kill our good little soldiers. The more I learn about all the functions they do for us, the less I want that to happen.
