It is hardly necessary to mention that the world is experiencing a global pandemic in the form of the CoronaVirus. At this point, we have a pretty good idea about the dangers that the virus causes but what a lot of people don’t realize is that there are other dangers besides a fatal infection. There is a real danger in not being able to maintain your health during a quarantine.
The isolation is bound to take a toll on your psychological health. Remember that we are social beings, and that a healthy human being relies on creating and nurturing relationships with others. Dealing with the fact that to socialize is not only potentially a violation of a law, but also a health risk, is contrary to human nature. And yet, we need to comply. So, how do you stay sane while confined within the walls of your home?
Alter Your Perspective
Instead of thinking that you’re trapped in your home, consider framing it like “I’ve got more time to do things at home now.” This is more than just a change in a few words; it helps set a framework for how your mind is going to process this reality. There is real value in being able to perceive things in a positive manner because it helps regulate your mood and can also help you sleep better at night.
Consume Offline Media
While the internet is a portal to a wealth of information, without fact-checking, it is also a source for wrong information. While it’s important to stay updated on events, obsessing over the pandemic is going to do more harm than good, especially when it causes panic. Limit your time online and consider reading a book or two. This not only helps you keep your mind sharp, but it’ll also keep you from stressing yourself out unnecessarily.
Stay Active
We all know the benefits of regular exercise. This is even more pronounced, now that there is a real need to stay healthy and fit. There are many workouts that you can do at home, from back and biceps workouts to legs and shoulder workouts. The value in exercise not only lies in how it helps you to maintain your muscle mass, but also in how it helps regulate your mood by causing your body to produce feel-good neurotransmitters such as Dopamine and Serotonin. It also helps reduce Cortisol production in the body. These combined effects are what produce that post-workout euphoria.
Organize Your Home
The disruption to our routines is one of the most-felt effects of the quarantines. It’s important to stick to your routines as best as you can because routines are what provide our lives with a degree of predictability and structure. Even when you’re at home, maintain your routines, keep your home organized. Work at your desk rather than in bed, get up in the morning and get enough sleep. Eat during the times you usually eat on a normal day. This will not only help you stay sane during lockdown, but will help you integrate back into your normal routine once the lockdowns are lifted.
Even when our regular routines have been disrupted, we have to remain functional, especially when you consider that humans have survived worse pandemics than the CoronaVirus. This is only temporary and we have to stay in mental and physical shape so that we’re able to go back to normal without too much trouble.
