Vitamin D

Bill Sardi discussed these points during an HBN interview June 29, 2022. A basic run down on vitamin D is on this linked page in the HBN Library. D has an important role in prevention (treatment?) of: arthritis, asthma, depression and obesity, dementia, brain shrinkage, brain health, many cancers including breast cancer, prevention of colds and flu, autoimmune diseases, deaths from infectious disease, hardening of the arteries and allergies. It also helps heart health, teeth, fertility and benign breast lumps. One benefit of vitamin D is that it keep our macrophages (the King Kong of immune cells from getting carried away and damaging healthy cells.) Anyone with multiple sclerosis (MS) or other autoimmune disease should study the remarkable recoveries using the Dr. Coimbra protocol.

  • With exposure to sunlight, the body makes vitamin D from a cholesterol layer under skin
  • That initial form, calcidiol, is stored in liver during the summer and can be drawn on in the winter when there is less sun.
  • Then calcidiol (and Cholecalciferol from supplements) go to the kidneys, where they are converted to the active form, calcitriol. Zinc is needed for that conversion. Fucoidan (a seaweed extract) helps that conversion as does forskolin from coleus which can double D levels. (Avoid Forskolin if you take a blood thinner.) Also, for conversion, the kidneys need to be working well. See below.*
  • Once converted, the active forms goes into the blood stream and is delivered to cells. However, getting into the cells isn’t automatic. Polyphenols (think resveratrol, quercitin, catekin, fisitin and cinnamon) sensitize the receptors.

The names of the D forms are not important to remember. Just know that there is a multi-step process which can be boosted by nutrients. As another example, the mineral magnesium is important to the whole vitamin D system. Deficiency of magnesium can lead to deficiency of D.

An enzyme (Nagalase) interferes with vitamin D and worse yet, shuts down activity of our macrophages (those important PacMen of our immune system). Cancer cells make that enzyme because obviously it works to their advantage allowing tumors to grow. Since we need macrophages not only to get rid of cancer cells, but also to clean up bacteria, viruses and dead blood cells. That’s where MAF comes in. Whatever has put the macrophages into inactivity, MAF wakes up those critical immune cells. This links to Sardi’s article (released exclusively to HBN) explaining MAF.  For access in the US to the Japanese MAF that he discussed, call 702-682-9945.

*Kidney Function

Persons who are very much overweight or diabetic likely do not have the best kidney function and don’t do an optimum job of converting the storage form of vitamin D to the active form. To improve kidney function, Bill Sardi said:

  • Reduce levels of stored iron and calcium (excess iron and calcium are aging factors). Use IP6 from rice bran, This article may be useful.
  • Sardi got many clients off of kidney dialysis with IP6, benfotiamine (e.g. Nerve Guardian) and 2 spoons of flaxseed meal (for the lignans that contains).
